About Us
About Us
From one man to over 13,000 Members. Advocacy, knowledge and networks remain the foundation of The Tax Institute.
The Tax Institute was born in a remarkable period of Australia's history. In July 1943 many nations, including ours, were embroiled in the Second World War. During this period, an inspired Sydney accountant made it his mission to try and improve the position of tax agents, tax law and tax administration across the industry.
Since then, Australia's tax system has changed greatly. Likewise, The Tax Institute has grown and evolved to become an increasingly respected professional association. Dynamic and responsive, the Institute has been instrumental in shaping changes that benefit both its members and the broader taxpaying community.
Committed to tax professionals
Today we are Australia’s leading professional association in tax, with offices in all major Australian cities. Focusing solely on tax, the Institute provides the best resources, education and networks in the industry. Our mission is to equip tax professionals with everything they need to demonstrate the highest level of expertise.
We have thousands of members ranging from new entrants, to experienced tax agents, accountants, lawyers and practitioners in all levels of business, Government and academia. All of these professionals have exclusive access to over 350 professional development events annually, including educational conferences and courses. The Tax Institute also provides an unequalled tax library service and access to both printed and online resources.
Striving for a better tax system
As the industry leading body, the Institute focuses on the future and does this through its policy and advocacy roles. We are a considerable driving force behind improvements in the tax system and its administration through our high quality government engagement
Our members provide invaluable technical assistance, practical guidance and industry examples, which help us continually improve Australia’s tax system. We successfully publicise matters for debate by using our voice in the media, through influential committees, like the National Tax Liaison Group and via our close relationships with Australia's revenue bodies.
The Institute strategically and proactively generates a number of submissions on new and proposed legislation, ATO and state revenue draft rulings and guidelines as well as tax policy initiatives from all levels of government. The Institute also provides technical resources to support Members.
