Why is the Tax Education Program changing?
With the introduction of the new Chartered Tax Adviser designation - a globally recognised designation for members of The Tax Institute - the Chartered Tax Adviser Program is designed to step candidates through each course in the critical first years of their employment in a tax role, as well as provide a pathway through the different levels of membership of The Tax Institute, with the final goal the globally recognised Chartered Tax Adviser designation.
Consisting of three courses, including the pinnacle CTA3 Advisory Exam, the program is now more closely aligned with work experience levels as proposed by the regulator, and The Tax Institute’s levels of membership. Catering for all tax professionals, from new entrants to the experience and career-minded tax practitioners, these practical courses will develop real-life skills that can be applied at work.
The enhancements to the program will achieve the desired outcome of providing graduates of The Chartered Tax Adviser Program with the skills, as well as industry status and recognition, that is required to become a highly valued member of the tax profession.
The Chartered Tax Adviser Program will consist of:
| The Tax Education Program | The Chartered Tax Adviser Program |
| Certificate in Foundation Tax | CTA1 Foundations |
| Certificate in Applied Tax | CTA2 Advanced |
| Diploma of Australian Taxation Law | Course in Australian Taxation Law |
| Diploma of Advanced Tax | CTA3 Advisory |
What's changed?
CTA2 Advanced (formerly the Certificate in Applied Tax)
CTA2 Advanced will feature revised learning outcomes in line with new course content, see our course units for more information.
The assessment for this course will include an exam, which tests the core topic areas, as well as an assessment at the course conclusion that tests the specialist topics to be researched. Assessment tasks are designed to replicate what candidates are called upon to complete competently in real-life.
CTA3 Advisory (formerly the Diploma of Advanced Tax)
CTA3 Advisory will feature a wider range of topics in the case study selection and assessment options.
The CTA3 Advisory Exam is also a stand-alone offering for candidates who want to achieve Chartered Tax Adviser status, and who have the sufficient skills and knowledge to undertake this assessment only pathway. The open-book written exam replaces the oral presentation format and takes 3 hours 15 minutes. Candidates prepare for the exam by writing a response to a scenario and then in the exam address a late breaking fact on that scenario.
Program pre-requisites
CTA2 Advanced and CTA3 Advisory courses now require candidates to confirm their experience by referring to particular work and employment experience as pre-requisites as part of the application process.
Program content
All courses now require candidates to self-assess against the topics of each module to ensure they are aware of the breadth of learning the course will present to them. Assessment tasks relate to core areas of knowledge and skill as well as testing specialist areas through research.
Membership
Membership of The Tax Institute is now a pre-requisite for enrolling in CTA2 Advanced and CTA3 Advisory courses, with courses also including defined membership pathways on successful completion and required experience levels. These include:
| The Chartered Tax Adviser Program | Membership Pathway |
| CTA1 Foundations | Associate |
