Dianne Retief, Lawyer at Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers, shares her advice for new tax professionals.
We caught up with Dianne at the Sydney Women in Tax Special Budget Edition lunch.
“Today's been the first day I've attended the Women's In Taxation luncheon,” she begins.
“I thought it was very interesting. There was a huge turnout and a really good panel that spoke.
“There was also representative in the panel from the ATO which always adds value.”
Dianne says another key takeaway is the great networking opportunity to meet people in other areas of taxation. As well as a great way to hear from speakers and their interpretation of the Budget.
So why does she love working in tax?
“Tax provides a lot of variety,” she says.
“There's federal taxes, GST, income tax. On a state level we have land tax, stamp duty, the payroll tax.
“I think there's just so much variety in the taxation and there's always changes emanating.”
How The Tax Institute has supported her career
“The Tax Institute has been really great for my career,” says Dianne.
“I've been a memberv now for approximately seven years. And Bob Deutsch, CTA, was one of my lecturers!”
Advice for new professionals
“As tax is such a diversified area, my advice is to really pick an area where you would like to specialise in and to focus on that particular area,” she advises.
“There are so many changes not only from the legislation point of view, but there are also cases and rulings.
“So, it so important to specialise.
“It’s also very important to have passion for what you do and the service that you provide to everyday taxpayers,” she adds.
