14 Dec 099 Activity statement refunds - lodge early to avoid delays
In a broadcast message sent to tax practitioners on 10 December 2009, Annamaria Carey, Assistant Commissioner, Tax Practitioner and Lodgment Strategy, advised that because of the ATO's new income tax system implementation taking place in the new year, the ATO recommends that business and individual taxpayers expecting a refund lodge their activity statements as early as possible to reduce the likelihood of any delays. The ATO says that activity statements should be lodged by 11 January 2010 to minimise the chance of any delays.
The ATO says that its computer systems will be unavailable from Friday, 22 January until Wednesday, 27 January 2010 while it implements the new system. There will also be some processing delays in the weeks following the implementation as the new system gradually returns to full processing levels. The ATO expects these delays may continue during February 2010.
