In a media release issued on 5 December 2007, the ATO announced an independent review into its information security practices as an added level of assurance. The ATO says that the review is timely given recent international concerns relating to information security and isolated incidents that raised security concerns. The incidents included the theft of a briefcase, containing limited information about two taxpayers, from a hotel room, and a computer disk security issue that did not result in any privacy concerns for any taxpayers.
The Commissioner, Michael D’Ascenzo, said he wanted to assure himself and the community that current information security procedures are rigorous, up to date and reflect changes in work practices as technology evolves.
