The ATO has provided the following update about its Change Program:
"The Tax Office’s Change Program Steering Committee has approved plans to continue to work towards deployment our new Income Tax System commencing from 22 January next year. Our plan is to start using the new system to process income tax returns from Monday 1 February 2010.
Our current system (The National Taxpayer System (NTS)) has been operating since the mid 1970’s to process all income tax returns and assessments. The deployment will mean we shutdown NTS and install the new Income Tax System into our Integrated Core Processing system. When planning your business and staffing arrangements for January 2010 we ask you to consider there will be system disruptions during this period.
Switching off one system and starting a new system always needs to be carefully considered. Our position has always been that we will only deploy a system when we are confident it is ready. Extensive testing and review of our progress will continue to ensure minimal disruption and inconvenience to you. Furthermore, the Change Program Steering Committee will formally review progress each month against this plan with final decisions on the deployment to be made in late December.
We will need to suspend some processing in the weeks leading up to the deployment of the new system. Further details about this will be provided as soon as possible.
We will continue to keep the community informed about this important release through various channels, but particularly through our consultative forums and the Change Program essentials page on our website."
