In a media release issued on 25 May 2006, the ATO warned people around Australia to be wary of individuals who claim to be working on behalf of the ATO, offering retirement income or other financial or taxation advice. The Commissioner, Michael D’Ascenzo, said that the ATO has become aware of people wrongly claiming to do so on its behalf. “We have already received a number of reports that suggest this activity is not confined to any one area within Australia and we are working with State and Federal Police to stop it,” he said.
“As identity crime is increasingly an issue, people should be extremely wary about providing their personal or financial details to others. Anyone who has been approached by an individual claiming to act on behalf of the Tax Office should phone 13 28 61 without delay," Mr D'Ascenzo said.
