28 Jun 066 Early access to superannuation benefitsAfter more than four years, on 19 June 2006 the Government tabled its response to the report of the former Senate Select Committee on Superannuation and Financial Services into early access to superannuation benefits, which was tabled on 31 January 2002. The Committee's report looked into the effectiveness and efficiency of the rules governing early access to
superannuation benefits on compassionate and severe financial hardship grounds. The Government rejected all nine of the Committee's recommendations, although there was some in-principle support for a legislative requirement to process early release claims within a specified time where conclusive medical evidence of a prescribed terminal illness was available.
