I refer to the comments last week by Senior Tax Counsel Michael Dirkis and the ATO on the super mailout – see 2007 TAXVINE No 20 (23) (25 May 2007). The ATO has/had a Client Preference form to direct mail. I clearly remember a few years ago spending a lot of staff time lodging batch CP forms (batches of 20 odd for 2000 clients still took a long time) to ensure that mail went to where we wanted. We made a clear preference that promotional/educational material went direct to clients.

It seems to me that the ATO had a system in place to deal with this and have either abandoned it or chosen to not use it. Thus, in either case this problem is clearly of their own making. I think it is an insult that some blame is put on us as Tax Agents.

Perhaps I should dig up the old CP forms and anything I receive that is not in accordance with those forms I return COD to Canberra."
