"I'd like to add to the story by Member 36 in last week's issue of TAXVINE. I have had a family trust since 1990, and have been lodging tax returns ever since. Recently the trust needed to apply for an ABN, and we did so. I received an ABN and a TFN notification. Trouble is the TFN is different to the one I've had for 19 years.

The effort we've had to go to get this fixed is ridiculous, with ATO staff at various levels left dumbfounded on how to fix the problem. The solution? They cancelled both the ABN and the new TFN. They then issued ANOTHER ABN. I will now have to re-quote this newer ABN, with the recipient wondering if I'm fiddling the system!!

It's really not good enough. When you revisit the online form that was lodged, it clearly asks "Do you wish to apply for a TFN?" We answered No. "Do you have a TFN?" We answered Yes, and then we quoted the 19 year old TFN. The integrity of the system is at risk here, ATO, I'd would like to think that you're on top of it."
