At the same time, the Commissioner, Michael D'Ascenzo, issued a message indicating that those people affected by bushfire or flood should not worry about tax matters right now. The ATO has set up a dedicated emergency support info line on 1300 304 975 for people to call for assistance with their tax affairs.
Then, in a broadcast message to tax agents, the ATO announced that it had arranged further practical help for people and businesses affected by the Victorian bushfires and North Queensland and Northern New South Wales floods. The Commissioner has agreed to extend lodgment and payment due dates for people and small businesses in affected areas who usually lodge monthly business activity statements in late February, March and April to 21 May 2009. In addition, he has extended the due date for all quarterly business activity statements normally due on 28 February and 28 April to 28 May 2009.
