"On checking the tax agent portal pre-filling report prior to finalising my client’s 2008 individual tax return, I was surprised to see Item D9 “pre-filled” with “cost of managing tax affairs for 2007-08”. The fee happens to be what I charged that particular client for his 2006 tax return, which was claimed in his 2007 tax return. Item D9 cannot be pre-filled as the ATO does not have information relating to what each individual client was charged in the preceding financial year! Surprisingly my client had about $600 in interest income, which was not in the pre-filling report. Maybe the ATO should stick to providing information that tax agents cannot obtain from their own records. As George Costanza’s dad would say in a particular Seinfeld episode: ‘serenity now!’"
