"A month ago, I wrote about aggressive collection practices by ATO appointed debt collection agencies. Today, 07 November 2008, we were called by Baycorp requesting/demanding us to a contact a client re an outstanding debt in order to get them to satisfy the debt.

First, it is not our role to act as debt collectors on behalf of the ATO (GST notwithstanding) and secondly a check of the Tax Portal revealed that the debt outstanding was correct however it was paid on 31 March 2008 with an effective date of 01 April 2008.

Why is the debt being chased 7 months after it has been paid and is Baycorp being paid for debts that do not exist and do we have to waste our time satisfying their query and to check the Tax Portal for our client (to make sure everything is in order)? - Not happy Michael!
