"The ATO is "helping" my clients again, this time via a letter to clients who declared rental income for the first time in 2007. The ATO wants to make sure clients "have all the information they need to prepare their 2008 return"!!
The letter includes "if you used a tax agent to prepare your 2007 income tax return, they will have received a copy of this letter too. They are qualified to help you prepare your income tax return and help you accurately work out your rental property income and expenses."
Well, thanks very much, so why annoy my clients at all? Why can't the ATO tell that the taxpayer did in fact use a tax agent? Why doesn't the ATO trust me to ensure clients make correct claims? Why waste time and resources at all on this?"
