"Re Member 2 about loss of $900 tax bonus resulting from Private Health Insurance Offset - see 2009 TAXVINE No 10 (20 March 2009).
The Private Health Insurance Offset can be claimed in two ways after the end of the financial year viz, either through ATO or Medicare. In my client's case, we have put through an amendment for 2007/08 deleting the offset from the Income Tax Return & she will claim the offset through Medicare. Now she should be eligible for the $900 bonus as Label G has been sufficiently reduced.
I don't know that we will be successful but we are going to try.
If my client was slack & submitted her paperwork to me now, we would not be claiming the Private Health Insurance Offset. I don't feel she should be penalised for lodging her tax return before the Stimulus Package was announced. $900 is a significant amount to her for minimal effort from me."
