"For a parent to be eligible to claim medical expenses for a full time university student 21 years or greater but less than 25 years, the student must have separate income less than $1,786. Thus, the student that earns $35 per week ($1,787 per annum) is not a dependant. It appears that this amount has not changed since 1975!
My private health insurer deems the same student a dependant if their income is less than $14,000 pa. Can this anomaly be redressed?
In the meantime, tell your clients to ensure that all children's wisdom teeth are removed & orthodontics completed by age 21. Nor are they permitted any broken limbs, appendicitis or other ailments until they reach 25 years."
