18 Dec 09 On the new notice of assessment

"I have just looked at the proposed new notice of assessment.

Taxpayers do not understand what a Dr or Cr is. In any event a Dr to the ATO is really a CR to a taxpayer. Just because bank statements are set out this way does not mean that they are "best practice".

Solution 6 now called MYOB AE has an alternative method of setting out the estimate of tax payable that I and other accountants insisted that we have about 15 years ago. This is a more consistent and understandable set out. The notice of assessment should be limited in most cases to 2 pages, not the 4 as proposed.

I also note that there is a reference number that is to be quoted if using e-tax. Bob Hawke may still be alive but he is forgotten by most citizens. So should the concept that the TFN is a secret number. Taxpayers now can use this "reference number" as well as the ABN and ACN which can be found on the internet. Can we please get over this throw back to the proposed Australia Card."
