23 Jun 066 Queensland Tax Agents BoardCraig Darley (Pitcher Partners, Brisbane) and Michael Dirkis met informally with the Queensland Tax Agents Board in Brisbane on Monday 19 June 2006. This first, informal meeting between the Professional Associations and the Board covered issues such as registrations, disciplinary proceedings and the proposed new regulatory regime for Tax Agents.
One issue the Board did stress was the lack of legislative discretion available to them, where Tax Agents are found guilty of tax offences arising from a failure to meet their own tax obligations, to take account of special circumstances. The Board stressed the need for Tax Agents, if they fall behind in their personal obligations, to commence discussions with the ATO. Failure to do so at the first sign of trouble can spiral into prosecution and de-registration, regardless of how dire the initial cause of the delay.
