The Young Practitioners Mentoring Program connects the skills and knowledge of our experienced members with younger members.

Mentees will receive the opportunity to gain insights and support from an experienced tax professional, build their network and make more meaningful professional connections, to ultimately take their career to the next level.

The mentor can shape the next generation of leaders, and help ensure the future of the profession, by sharing their knowledge with young members.

About the Young Practitioners Mentoring Program

The Tax Institute is committed to providing highly relevant learning and development opportunities for members to connect with and learn from other members across their lifelong career journey.

This program, piloted with great success in 2018, provides participants with the greatest chance of success through a scientifically developed matching process which links mentees with mentors who align with key focus skills as well as providing participants with online training, support, webinars and resources.

The Young Practitioners Mentoring Program is available exclusively to members of The Tax Institute. The program will commence on 30 April and run through to 9 December 2019 with each participant committing to a 1:1 mentoring relationship, with structured training, support and resources included to ensure success. How to Apply

Mentees: A young practitioner is generally someone aged 35 or younger, however, this program is also open to practitioners who might be over 35 and still relatively new to the profession. This could be someone who has only entered the profession later in their career journey, or have taken career breaks.  The program is open exclusively to members of The Tax Institute.

Mentors: To take apart as a mentor you should have more than 10 years practicing experience and be able to provide strong support and guidance to a younger practitioners. 

Both mentees and mentors must also be willing to attend program webinars and complete the training provided.

Why is The Tax Institute running this program?

The Young Practitioners Mentoring Program was developed as a direct result of member research undertaken from 2015 onwards, which indicated a clear need for a program of this nature, especially from our younger members.

Who runs this program?

The Tax Institute has partnered with Art of Mentoring to deliver this program. The Art of Mentoring were selected based on their superior matching algorithm to connect the right mentors with mentees, and the support program they provide.

The Tax Institute are managing the program using the AOM platform and resources. Your program contacts are TTI staff members.

How do you match mentors and mentees? What if I have specific requirements?

You will need to complete a profile questionnaire along with your application, allowing us to pair you based on a scientifically developed matching process which links mentees with mentors who align on key criteria and desired outcomes.  If for whatever reason you cannot be matched with a mentor, your mentee application fee will be fully refunded.

Support

This structured program is fully equipped with the best preparation and online tools to enable the greatest chance of success. Beyond the scientifically-driven algorithms to match mentees and mentors, both participants in the relationship will receive training, support, webinars and other resources throughout the nine-month program.

Costs

There is an application fee of $349 (including GST) for the first 20 successful mentees. Payment must be made on application. If you are unable to be matched the fee will be fully refunded. There is no charge for mentors to participate. Note that mentors do not receive payment of any kind for participating in the program.

Getting the most out of a mentoring relationship

As a mentee

  • Set clear objectives for nine months and be ready to discuss those at the beginning.
  • As a mentee, it’s up to you to get the most out of the relationship.
  • Come to meetings with mentor prepared with planned topics.
  • Balance the personal and professional relationship with your mentor.
  • Be open and honest with your mentor about your challenges and weaknesses.
  • Rely on your mentor for guidance, not answers.
  • Be open to feedback and willing to take it on board in your work.
  • Set aside time for the mentoring process and keep all scheduled appointments with your mentor and display professional behaviour.

As a mentor

  • While we provide some structure and support along the way, it’s ultimately up to you and the mentee to determine how best to make the relationship work.
  • By providing advice, guidance and support to young members at the start of their career, your role is to help your mentee progress professionally and personally.
  • Establish open and honest communication and a forum for idea exchange.
  • Foster creativity and independence.
  • Help build self-confidence and offer encouragement.
  • Provide honest and timely feedback to your mentee. 
  • Provide opportunities for the mentee to talk about concerns and ask questions.
  • Above all, listen.
