23 Apr 13 ABNs under review: updating client details on the ABR

The ATO advises that the Australian Business Register (ABR) is reviewing and cancelling Australian business numbers (ABN) where records indicate holders are not conducting an enterprise and, therefore, not entitled to hold an ABN.

If an agent's clients have their ABN cancelled, they will receive a letter providing the reason and their review rights. If they do not agree with the cancellation of their ABN, they can object - if they can show they are entitled to have an ABN, it can be reinstated.

In addition to the ABN cancellation review, the Registrar will also be contacting ABN holders to remind them of the requirement to update their records.

ABN holders are legally required to notify the Registrar of changes to their registration details within 28 days.
