Just got another letter from the ATO where they are trying to look for naughty people lodging super tax returns by fraudulently including an SMSF auditor’s number. Go get them Fido!
What is interesting is the ATO’s search technique. They have done a search on the contact name in the agent’s declaration on the form and are trying to match this with either the audit fee paid or the name of the auditor. The problem arises that the contact name is pre-set in our MYOB AE TAX to my name.
My secretarial staff have now told me that when the ATO rings our office they ask for the person that prepared the return and these tax offices realise that the contact name is usually pre-set. I plan to change the contact address to my client assistant to stop this data matching.
There is also the question about the audit fee. We send one invoice annually to the client for all the firms work and thus leave the audit fee blank as there is no distinct fee. We will now estimate the audit fee for the auditor to keep the ATO computer happy.
