"We received and replied to a letter from the ATO questioning the Medicare exemption eligibility of a Korean War veteran aged 80. The ATO had requested us to furnish within 28 days the exemption category and supporting evidence. The client has furnished this information in past years when a Veteran affairs certificate accompanied the return when lodged. Not knowing the ATO systems, I would be very surprised if this information is not already in their system and also if it is not readily accessible from the Veteran Affairs. Having regard to the age of Gold Card holders and the decreasing number of aged war veterans it appears to be a lazy audit, with no checking, no filters or consideration before despatching the letter. It can only be said to be rude and offensive, is this the Australian Government?"
