30 Jul 10 ATO Briefing Tax Time 2010Angie Ananda FTIA attended the ATO Briefing for Tax Time 2010 on Thursday, 30 July 2010. The ATO advised that as of 26 July 2010 - 830,000 income tax refunds had issued and 940,000 Notice of Assessments (NOAs) had also issued. As of 28 July 2010 - the ATo had issued over 946,000 refunds and 1.1 million NOA's.
The ATO issued an eLink that confirms that there has been no change to their service standards for the processing of paper or electronic returns. The ATO recognises that there is some increased awareness and concerns surrounding service standards, but they are monitoring service standards closely.
The processing of returns with HELP/SFSS is continuing, with a significant number released in recent days, however there will continue to be some minor delays. The ATO also advised that there may be some delays with returns containing ETPs, but they are monitoring those and do not expect any issues.
ATO call centres are receiving significant number of calls in relation to progress of returns and other matters. There has been no change to their procedures in dealing with tax agent’s enquiries regarding the progress of returns, however, it was noted that not 100% of returns will be processed with in 14 days. This is reflected in the ATO recorded messaging of IVR for Electronic returns: 'Lodging electronically is the fastest way to receive your refund and most electronic returns process within 14 days, but some returns require manual processing and can take longer to process than others. Your return should take no longer than 30 days to process from when it was received.
