08 Feb 2019 ATO contacting businesses about overdue TPARs

It was reported in last week’s TaxVine (TaxVine 3, 1 February 2019) that:
“From February, the ATO will be contacting businesses in the building and construction industry about their overdue taxable payments annual reports”
As far as I am aware, there is no way of knowing whether the TPAR has been lodged with the ATO, let alone whether it’s been processed by the ATO.
Some clients prepare their own. Other clients are happy to engage us. But surely the TPAR lodgment should be available online via the tax agent portal – how hard can it be?!
When dealing with the client’s TPAR year to year, we can quickly reference whether the TPAR has been lodged or remains outstanding (similar to BAS).
If the ATO want this information, no problem… but give us the tools to freely provide it quickly and easily.
We much prefer to address any outstanding lodgments at the time of preparing accounts, not 6 and 12 months later.
Let’s be honest, this current system is archaic!
