Scams data

The ATO compiles information received from the public about impersonation scams. This intelligence provides the latest information about tax and superannuation scams.

In September 2021, the ATO received 1,171 reports of ATO impersonation scams.

People reported losing $26,425 to scammers. This is a 74% drop from last month and a 96% drop from September 2020.

Phoenix Taskforce outcomes – Achievements for 2020–21

Through the Phoenix Taskforce, the ATO works with partner agencies to detect, reduce and deter illegal phoenix activity.

In 2020–21 the ATO:

  • completed 946 audits and reviews
  • collected more than $150 million in cash, contributing to government spending on essential services
  • received more than 2,355 referrals of suspected illegal phoenix activity through the Tax Integrity Centre.
