The ATO has started sending SMS messages to taxpayers, telling them to check their inboxes in myGov.
If a client logs in promptly, they can see they have a tax debt, which might differ from our predicted outcome. BUT the Notice of Assessment hasn't yet been issued, so there's no way of knowing whether ATO has recreated a debt from a past decade, included extra tax for excess concessional contributions, or any other random adjustment/s.
What are we supposed to do? How can we help our client/s?
Perhaps we should tell the clients to phone the ATO and give instructions to delete their mobile phone number and cancel the myGov registration. myGov is a complete nuisance.
All this mess could be avoided if the ATO delayed sending their SMS messages until AFTER their relevant paperwork has been issued.
Let’s all hope and pray for significant improvement in ATO performance in 2019.
