On Tuesday 5 August 2014, Tax Counsel Thilini Wickramasuriya ATI attended a meeting of the ATO Tax Practitioner Advisory Group to discuss issues arising during Tax Time 2014. 

The ATO indicated that it was continuously monitoring the Tax Agent Portal and that it has now appeared to stabilise. The ATO foreshadowed an initiative whereby tax practitioner calls will be handled by the ATO general call centre. In terms of the availability of pre-fill information, the ATO was well ahead of last year’s timeframes and was waiting for pre-fill information from one large health fund and pre-fill information regarding dividends. 

Some of the issues raised by tax practitioner members were:

Availability of pre-fill information from managed funds which was available in September during Tax Time 2013. ATO to check when this information would be available this Tax Time. 

Some taxpayers claiming private health insurance rebate prior to pre-fill information being available have had these claims rejected by the ATO. ATO advised that taxpayers should try and wait until pre-fill information is available but will investigate why the claims were being rejected. 

Some taxpayers lodging returns and then having them cancelled by the ATO without a reason provided.
