On Thursday 1 May 2014, Tax Counsel Thilini Wickramasuriya ATI attended an out-of-session consultation of the ATO Tax Practitioner Advisory Group. The purpose of the meeting was to provide the ATO with feedback in relation to the contents of a document which is intended to establish the ATO’s approach to addressing risk through tax practitioners and other intermediaries. The document seeks to implement a recommendation by the Inspector General of Taxation (IGT) his review into ATO’s use of compliance risk assessment tools.
The IGT recommended that, in consultation with tax practitioners, the ATO develop and publish a complete guide on the operation of the risk differentiation framework for tax practitioners. Issues discussed by members included:
- whether the document was a “complete guide” as recommended by the IGT;
- referencing to other ATO publications such as the protocol on contacting clients of tax practitioners; and
- general updates to improve readability and utility of the document for tax practitioners.
Once finalised, the document will be available on www.ato.gov.au
