On Tuesday 8 July 2014, Tax Counsel Thilini Wickramasuriya ATI attended a meeting of the ATO Tax Practitioner Advisory Group to discuss issues arising during Tax Time 2014.
Members would recall that last week in TaxVine, Member 76 raised a concern about the unavailability of the Tax Pack Supplement 2014 Instructions in pdf format this year. This concern was echoed by some other members of the ATPAG. The ATO responded to this concern by noting that the ATO, as a government agency, was required to comply with the government’s web content accessibility guidelines which stipulate that a html version of all online products should be provided as these versions have been determined to be more accessible than the pdf format. The guidelines do not preclude the ATO from also a providing a pdf format of those products, however making an additional pdf format available requires more time and expense on the part of the ATO. Accordingly, the ATO has been limiting the number of pdf forms available and the unavailability of the Tax Pack Supplement 2014 Instructions is a result of this. Members raised the concern that the html version of the instructions could only be printed page by page which is time consuming to tax practitioners and a pdf version is easier to access offline. The ATO noted this feedback and indicated that they will work internally to find a solution to these concerns. We will keep members updated as to the progress of this issue.
The key messages from the meeting as circulated by the ATO should be available via the link below shortly.
