Angie Ananda FTIA also attended a special meeting of the ATO Tax Practitioner Forum on Tuesday, 23 March 2010. The key focus points of the meeting were:
  1. The issues with the Notice of Assessments (NoA) and Statement of Accounts (SoA) identified by externals;
  2. The possible improvements/changes to the NoA and SoA that the ATO are considering; and
  3. Communication strategies.
The ATO have prepared a detailed list of all the major complaints received by the externals in relation to the new SoA and NoAs. The issues include the length, OCR/scanning capabilities, clarity regarding due dates and payment amounts, reference numbers, and references to the income tax year in question. The externals were given the opportunity to express their views on the priority of these issues.

The ATO indicated that they are planning to release more communication products to better explain the new SoA and NoAs.

The Taxation Institute emphasised the number of member complaints that we had received on this issue and the need for action to be taken. The ATO made it clear that they were aware of all the issues that had been raised and thanked the Taxation Institute for passing along all of their members' input for suggested improvements.

The Taxation Institute requested the ATO make some communication publicly available in relation to timing and the changes they had decided to proceed with as soon as possible. The ATO indicated that they would work towards making the issues list publicly available with an indication regarding the timing of improvements.
