Deepti Paton ATIA attended the ATO's Building and Construction Industry Forum on Wednesday 20 October 2010. At the forum, the ATO gave members an update on obtaining and managing information from third parties (including pre-filling), the use of small business benchmarks, ATO and legislative measures to tackle phoenix activity and developments in relation to the Australian business register.
At the meeting, Treasury gave members an update on further legislation designed to curb phoenix activity (announced by the Australian Labor Party on 25 July 2010 as part of its "Protecting workers' entitlements package"). This legislation is intended to come into effect on 1 July 2011. Treasury also commented on activity in the building and construction industry including legislation to bring to effect ‘tax incentives for green buildings', an election commitment that is commented on in Treasury's Incoming Government Brief (the "Red Book").
