15 Aug 12 Check with your client before you issue an on-the-spot refund

The ATO has warned agents that if they are intending to give their client a refund before the ATO has issued the client's notice of assessment and the agent requires further information regarding any possible debts with other departments, such as Child Support or Centrelink, they need to:

  • obtain this information from their client, or
  • be an authorised contact for your client with that department so that you can contact them on your client's behalf.

A registered tax agent is able to represent their client in matters with the ATO if they satisfy the Proof of Identity requirements; however, this has no operation in relation to other departments. Agents will need to take separate action to become an authorised contact for their client with other departments.
