07 May 1010 Does the ATO have to pay withholding tax on interest?

"Is the ATO obliged to withhold tax (10%) from interest that it pays or credits to non-resident taxpayers? (Paid or credited from so many different accounts, but that's a separate stupidity issue.)

If yes, it seems the ATO's old computer system does not comply with this law, since we can find no withholding tax from payments or credits of interest by the ATO to non-residents.

Will the ATO take any action against itself? Can we watch and laugh at ATO argue with itself? We dream about whether their wonderful new computer system will be able to achieve this small task.

If it wasn't so sad (and true), this might be a good joke."
