28 Sep 10 Examining compliance, ATO governance and tax risk management

The Deputy Commissioner of Taxation, Large Business and International (Case Leadership), Mr Jim Killaly, gave a speech to the 8th Annual Corporate Tax Summit, 22-24 September 2010, in which he canvassed topics including competition among taxation regimes and its effect on tax compliance, tax-driven restructuring of multinational enterprises, the benefits that a multinational group obtains by operating in Australia, level of voluntary compliance, interpretation of tax legislation, headline issues for large business, topic areas for income tax compliance focus, integrity of business systems and their ability to correctly report GST, a growing preparedness by many large companies to seek a cooperative relationship with the ATO, ATO views on innovative financing arrangements, taking an integrated approach to tax law design, the ATO's approach to transfer pricing cases, the new ATO Strategic Statement, and other matters.
