"As I sit in my office on a Friday afternoon one week before the festive season break, I am amused at reading Member Feedback, and all of the comments are but so true. I would like to fully support what Member 374 wrote in last week's TAXVINE - see 2010 TAXVINE No 51 (17 December 2010).

In particular his comments about the lack of success (not effort) the professional bodies have had in obtaining improvements and changes in the system are so true.

I have had a client's substantial tax refund go into another person's bank account through 1 digit being incorrectly typed on the return. It has taken nearly 3 months to rectify the issue with the ATO and the Bank, finally obtaining the cheque recently.

The time spent cannot be recovered from my client and the continue explanations to him that the matter has been escalated by the ATO staff has been a joke.

What if we as tax agents and professionals went on strike and extended leave for 3 months without lodging any returns. We would block the supply of revenue and how would the Government and ATO react then?

Anyway, Merry Christmas and a Happy and more peaceful 2011 to all the professional members in Public Practice and staff of the Taxation Institute.
