"The ATO must be under pressure to collect every last $ of tax.
I have received notification to a client taxpayer who omitted $107 in interest from the 2009 income tax return. It will recover around $35 in additional tax.
I wonder how much has it cost to recover the tax though? The ATO had to produce and mail the original notification, we had write to the client to forward the ATO advice, the client will no doubt ring to ask for further explanation, the ATO will have to issue an amended assessment, we will then have to forward the amendment onto the client and the payment will have to be processed.
Doesn't seem very efficient to me and I wonder if the ATO should have some commonsense cut off level below which the cost outweighs the benefit?"
