24 Sep 1010 Lodgment Working Group
Tax Counsel Angie Ananda FTIA and Deepti Paton ATIA attended the Lodgment Working Group meeting last Thursday 16 September 2010 and Friday 17 September 2010.
In Taxvine last week it was noted that the Taxation Institute (in conjunction with other professional bodies) had submitted to the Group a list of top lodgment issues faced by members. At the meeting the ATO agreed to provide a formal response to this list. The Taxation Institute will provide a link in Taxvine to this formal response when it is available.
The group also discussed the ATO's program to increase electronic interactions with tax agents. Specifically, the ATO aims to increase electronic lodgment and the use of electronic funds transfer systems for payment of tax liabilities and receipt of refunds, and is investigating the issue of electronic notices of assessment. The group discussed the challenges and benefits associated with this program. Members noted that while transitional systems would be appropriate, an eventual move to fully electronic interactions between tax agents and the ATO was a worthwhile goal.
The ATO also briefed the group on its rewrite of the ATO Receivables Policy into a series of practice statements. The ATO noted that the new practice statements will not reflect a change in policy, and only superfluous content will be removed in its rewrite. As a result, there will be no formal consultation on this rewrite.
