Last Friday, 8 July 2011 Tax Counsel Deepti Paton ATIA attended a meeting of the ATPF's Lodgment Working Group.

At this meeting, participants discussed:

  • The 2011-12 Lodgment Program (released 1 July 2011) and changes from the previous year’s lodgment program.
  • Strategies being adopted by the ATO to increase compliance with the lodgment program. In this regard, the ATO is currently working on a project to differentiate between tax agents who fulfil their lodgment obligations in a timely manner and tax agents that do not so comply. The objective of this project is to assist tax agents that are having trouble complying with their lodgment program and further encourage compliance where appropriate.
  • Strategies being adopted by the ATO in relation to tax agent’s own lodgment obligations. The ATO noted that the level of compliance in the tax agent community was high, but not complete. The ATO notes that egregious cases of non compliance in this regard will be referred to the Tax Practitioners Board as appropriate. We encourage members to fully comply with their lodgment obligations in a timely fashion.
  • Members gave the group an update on the discussions at the recent meeting of the Software Developers Consultative Group.
