Last Friday 23 March 2012, Tax Counsel Stephanie Caredes ATIA attended a meeting of the ATO Tax Practitioner Forum's Lodgment Working Group (LWG). The following issues were discussed by members:
- Lodgment Differentiation Program - following on from the 2 day ATO Lodgment Program Differentiation Co-Design Workshop that was held on 21 and 22 February 2012 (see 2012 TaxVine No.5 for a summary), the LWG considered the outcomes from the Workshop. The ATO is continuing to work on a program that will differentiate between tax agents who fulfil their lodgment obligations in a timely manner and those who do not and may need assistance to do so. The Tax Institute has been involved in the consultation with the ATO in the formulation of the program and will actively consult with the ATO during implementation of the program to ensure unintended consequences do not arise for tax agents who comply with their obligations. The Tax Institute will continue to provide members with information about the program as the rollout of the program by the ATO begins over the next few months.
- ATO Service Delivery and Electronic Interactions - issues around ATO service delivery and electronic interactions with the profession were discussed by the forum to consider strategies that would both improve service delivery by the ATO and interaction for the profession with the ATO on an electronic basis.
- Software Developers Consultative Group - An update was provided to the forum from the Software Developers Consultative Group about various projects the Group has been working on, such as the move to the Standard Business Reporting platform and increasing use of AUSKeys and the availability of a CGT Small Business Concessions Tool for taxpayers on the ATO website.
