"The question arises, why has this become an issue now? Why have the ATO implemented this system without any discussion or notice to Tax Agents? Is anyone in the ATO responsible for communicating these changes? If so, have they been successful and should their job be reviewed? We all know self-assessment has failed but when will the ATO take responsibility now for assessing tax returns like it used too.
I am also concerned as many small companies pay too much PAYG withholding as a precaution to ensure that they do not end up with a large tax liability at the end of the year. Most of the small companies also have hand written PAYG summaries. Scary.
Twenty years ago under full assessment it took 8 weeks to get a refund. Now with all of the advanced technology and hundreds of millions on computer systems it takes 12 weeks to review a return. I am glad my administrative system has not declined to the level of the ATO."
