The ATO responds to an issue raised by Member 74 - see 2014 TaxVine No 22 (27 June 2014) - about telephone calls from the ATO early collections section.
“When the authenticity of an ATO call is questioned, we ask our staff to provide their full name and the ATO switchboard number (13 28 69). They will then schedule a call back in 30 minutes to allow the client time to make a call to the switchboard to confirm the staff member’s identity.
We are also aware that there are a number of scams going around, especially at this time of the year. We encourage anyone with suspicions regarding the authenticity of contact made from the ATO to contact us.
