MEMBER 69 responds to Member 55's feedback in last week's TAXVINE - see 2013 TAXVINE No 10 (28 March 2013) - about the delays in obtaining ABN/GST registration:
"In reply to Member 55 from last week, I advise the following.
The ABN for a Company is very easy to obtain, one just looks up the formula on the ATO website, reads the formula, calculates the ABN and you are done. A very simple calculation.
Not a problem. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for an individual or super fund etc.
In regards to using the ABR site I can advise that the other week I applied for an ABN, unfortunately did not receive it straight away, did look at the ABR site 2 days later and it had already been posted in ABN lookup.
To register for GST is more problematic, one needs to wait for ages for the ATO to send you the TFN and then we need to register for GST on the tax agents' Portal, so messy and a great waste of time."
