MEMBER 32 comments on Member 29's feedback - see 2012 TAXVINE No 5 (24 February 2012) - regarding problems with the Portal:

"I also have difficulty with Portal log in - although at random times, I have found that if I immediately go back into the Portal from that 'technical difficulties' message, I am whizzed past the logon page (with all of its security settings), and into the Portal itself.

Surprisingly, if I am working on a client, and the system experiences a 'technical difficulty', when I immediately go back in, I am taken straight to the client's accounts.

Frustrating, time wasting and beggars belief!!

Who needs security when we have the ATO?"

THE TAX INSTITUTE'S TAX COUNSEL, STEPHANIE CAREDES, COMMENTS: "Technical issues with the ATO's Portal were noted at both the ATO Lodgment Program Differentiation Co-Design Workshop held on 21 and 22 February 2012 and at the ATO Tax Practitioner Forum meeting held on 24 February 2012. The ATO is aware of difficulties being experienced by tax agents and is working towards improving the Portal to alleviate these issues."

MEMBER 33 writes:

"At this time (end February 2012) we are checking our client list and spending a ridiculous amount of time having to check 'unlodged' status as per the tax Portal report for the 2011 when the taxpayer or entity only became 'a taxpayer;' after 30 June 2011. Surely the ATO can use their 'you beaut' software to ensure these are recorded as NN status instead of unlodged status when we produce these reports. Another waste of time for us due to ATO inefficiency.

Further, we have clients where tax returns are lodged over a month ago and/or cu's have been done and their status is still unlodged. We have to lodge cu's as the Portal will not allow us to update status and we are advised to contact the ATO.

THE TAX INSTITUTE'S TAX COUNSEL, STEPHANIE CAREDES, COMMENTS: "Assistance with client list management for tax agents as well as processing 'client update' forms was a topical issue at the ATO Lodgement Program Differentiation Co-Design Workshop held on 21 and 22 February 2012. We continue to raise this issue with the ATO. In response, the ATO is looking at how to resolve these issues with electronic lodging and updates and will work with practitioners and the professional bodies through both the ATO Tax Practitioner Forum and the Lodgement Working Group on this matter. We will keep you updated."
