The ATO responds to the comments from Member 275 in last week's TAXVINE - see 2013 TAXVINE No 48 (13 December 2013) - about the ATO of using emails and SMSs to ‘push out’ their messages:

“The ATO will use email and SMS to advise potentially eligible self-preparing taxpayers of the new service and will direct them to log into the secure ATO website via where they will be able to access and complete their return after they have logged on with their unique user name and password. The emails and SMS messages will contain no personal data. The ATO has made use of email and SMS channels for marketing purposes in the past to those taxpayers who have provided their email address or mobile phone number. The ATO's website here provides tips for recognising and avoiding tax scams and fraud in an online environment.”
