"We have a simple solution to this stupidity.
Just before the lodgment deadline, we'll be deleting from our client list most clients whose returns will become overdue.
So we should easily meet the 85% objective and receive extensions for the very few that are needed. This simple process will shift responsibility for chasing up the slow clients, straight back to the ATO.
More work for them, less work for us. Perfect.
When thinking more broadly about this 85% issue, it seems a perfect example of unilateral ATO action that could (should?) have been vastly improved with suitable consultation.
Seems clearly unlikely to achieve desired outcomes, and hopefully won't last long."
