"I have a better story than Member 190's about the (possibly) unintended consequences of the Medicare Levy Surcharge - see 2011 TAXVINE No 41 (21 October 2011).
I have two married clients, both high income earners, who have their own separate individual private hospital insurance cover. Both were satisfied with their policies and did not want to change.
Trouble is, a couple of years ago they had a child. The ATO then assessed BOTH the husband and wife for the Surcharge from the date of the child's birth as the whole family no longer had the required cover."
