Why are dealings with ATO frequently so clumsy?
Last year we lodged an income tax return for a client who had changed her surname. It’s a reasonably common occurrence for someone who becomes married, or divorced, or any other reason/s.
Sadly, it seems that carefully including "Y" in the box on the front page of the return form "Has the taxpayer changed their name?" is completely pointless, and a useless waste of time. ATO systems persist in ignoring the details carefully included in the previous income tax return.
Please could TaxVine ask the ATO why this is so unnecessarily complicated.
We're not interested in being told "You have to do this in the myGov or portal", when the new name and simple yes-box on income tax return (signed by the taxpayer) should be sufficient.
Meanwhile, welcome to Australia. Our public bureaucracy are world champions at making simple things complicated.
