“Member 32 previously commented (2015 TAXVINE No 6 (27 February 2015)) upon the inability of ATO to keep their ABR register updated with correct business address/es from Income Tax Returns.
The ATO response reported in 2015 TAXVINE No 7 (6 March 2015) is complete obfuscation.
I agree with Member 32. Of course the postal address for tax returns can be different from the business address recorded on the ABR.
I’ve just checked all the tax forms: Company, Partnership, Trust, and Individual. Each tax form has a ‘Business Address’ that is quite separate from the postal or home address.
What part of ‘Business Address’ does the ATO not understand? Surely that’s the same business address they should use for the ABR. And just to make things easy, of course we include the ABN on each Income Tax Return.
I know you’re busy too, but please could TTI continue to advocate on this issue.”
THE ATO NOW RESPONDS:
“Business address information collected from an Income Tax Return is by itself not sufficient to keep all address information in the Australian Business Register (ABR) up to date. However, we are currently investigating updating the ABR from business addresses provided on the Income Tax Return. Please note this does not remove the legal obligation to notify the Registrar of any changes to business information held in the ABR within 28 days.”
