MEMBER 379 writes in response to Member 376's defence of the ATO:

"With regard to the comments of Member 376 in last week's TAXVINE - 2010 TAXVINE No 51 (17 December 2010).

Perhaps you have only been around since the introduction of GST in 2000. The problem I have is when the ATO chases me regarding PAYG for clients who were removed from my program in 1996.

I also feel insulted when the ATO tells me I should update the client details in the Portal. Sure, I know the name, address, tax file number and date of birth of a clients who left me 15 years ago.

It's also a little difficult to know where some clients have gone. Many people obtain the services of Tax Agents who do not write professional letters and do not change the client details for Activity Statement/PAYG statements. This then leads to the many debt collection calls for clients who departed years ago.

As everyone's time is being wasted, perhaps the ATO should look to changing this system which has not worked property since 2000."
