In 2014 TAXVINE No 37 (10 October 2014), Member 155 wrote about ATO delays in relation to information about HECS-HELP Benefits.
THE ATO NOW RESPONDS
"The ATO is experiencing larger than normal volumes of HECS-HELP Benefit applications which are causing delays in our processing times.
At present, the only mechanism for a person to enquire on the status of the HECS-HELP Benefit application form is by phone. The ATO is looking into other channels regarding the progress of all application forms to make our service more contemporary.
Where a person has sought and been approved for a HECS-HELP Benefit, the Benefit will either reduce their compulsory HELP repayment or for Early Childhood Education teachers only, reduce their accumulated HELP debt if they are not required to make a compulsory repayment.
Where a person had a compulsory repayment raised on their income tax notice of assessment prior to their HECS-HELP Benefit application being processed, upon that application being successful they will receive an amended notice of assessment which will show the amount of the HECS-HELP Benefit."
